You Are Not Alone

Every human has different needs related to self-care. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has wonderful resources for those who may be in need of helpful tips to take care of YOU. The mind needs routines, goals, and breaks. The body needs sleep, mindfulness, (healthy) food, exercise, and down-time or relaxation. The soul needs to connect with others based on common interests, feelings, and passions. A clean room and items that help you feel at peace are crucial for relaxation in the spaces we use for “me-time”.

On campus, we have many self-help resources that can be found at CAPS! They also provide access to wonderful professionals. The Campus Recreation and Wellness Center is open and can be a wonderful outlet if you are looking to incorporate fitness into your wellness routine. Additionally, our Out of the Darkness (OOTD) club seeks to decrease suicide rates and raise mental health awareness. If you have a passion for helping others, reach out! Quick Tips:

You are not alone. If you feel alone, we want to be here for you. If you are feeling anxious, grounding techniques can be wonderful. Check out the CAPS self-help videos, or search on YouTube for ways that others ground themselves! Mental Health Professionals can help you figure out which grounding techniques work best for you! Make sure sources are valid if you are looking online outside of CAPS. Naming inanimate objects around the room (color, shape) and trying to practice in-the-moment thinking can help ground you.

Journaling can be helpful. Try writing down the things you tell yourself; then read them out loud. Ask yourself… would I say this to my best friend? Loved ones? If the answer is no, that is not fair to you. Being kind to yourself can be hard, but we must prioritize self-love. Everyone is different and beautiful in their own ways. If we were all the same... what fun would that be?

Remember that social media platforms are where people put their best foot forward. Stop scrolling. Stop comparing. Delete the apps! Keep up with your moods when scrolling. What apps make you compare yourself to others? Is this fair to you? Does this help YOU?

Go for a run! Personally, I used to hate running. When I started to run, I realized that all I could focus on during the run was meeting my goal of a good workout. After, I felt reset, relaxed, accomplished, and TIRED. If running isn’t your thing, that’s fine! Go on a walk outside! Practice physical distancing and invite a friend. Moving around helps your heart and mind.

Surround yourself with people who you feel best around. Cut out the toxicity you do not deserve. You cannot change those who do not see a need for change.

Has your favorite artist released any new music? Check!

Jot down what helps you when you are stressed (ex. Crafting, exercising, cooking, reading, Netflix, puzzles, crossing off something on checklist, etc.). Make time for stress-relieving activities! Re-watch your favorite movie. Call the important people in your life. Make time for YOU.
