The Online Professional Certificate in Functional Nutrition has been designed to meet the growing demand for Registered Dietitians, DTRs, personal trainers, athletic trainers, allied health/medical and fitness professionals and the general public who would like to obtain the latest roadmap on selecting the best functional nutrients and super foods. This comprehensive Web-based Certificate program provides an in-depth examination of contemporary nutrition topics designed to inform individuals about the latest research on eating super foods, organically, and genetically modified foods. Additional topics include shopping for functional foods successfully, environmental nutrition issues, and educating you on eating earth-friendly food sources.

The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing agency for the American Dietetic Association (ADA) has approved the Certificate in Nutrition program for 20 Continuing Professional EducationUnits (CPEUs) or 10 (CPEUs) per course for both the Registered Dietitian (RDs) and Dietetic Technician-Registered (DTRs).

This program will help allied health/medical and fitness professionals, families and anyone interested in living healthier to utilize the latest evidence based resources to attain overall health improvement. Content and curriculum in each course is designed to prepare allied health care professionals and Registered Dietitians to apply their client’s health history toward optimal nutritional health and well-being. Personal trainers and fitness professionals will learn fundamental nutrition education so that working in partnership with Registered Dietitians will maximize results for their clients. Individual consumers will benefit by learning more about contemporary nutrition concerns, what foods to include in their daily diet, and how their relationship with food affects their health.

Program Requirements:

To earn the certificate you are required to complete all two core courses. The two core courses are offered in an OPEN ENROLLMENT FORMAT, meaning you can register AT ANY TIME, and once logged in, you are provided 8 full weeks of unlimited access for each individual course you registered for with no penalty for finishing early. Typically the program can be completed in as little as 8 weeks, but you must complete the requirements within two-years.

Award of the Certificate:

  • Professional Certificate in Functional Family Nutrition: complete all two core courses within a period of two years
  • Complete and receive a passing grade of (C- or above) in all courses; which includes quizzes, exams, written/research projects, and class assignments.

Course Descriptions

Course 1: Smart Nutrition: Healthy Eating for all Generations........... $249
This course is based on current and peer reviewed research that will provide professionals and nonprofessionals alike an easy to use roadmap for improving eating habits. Topics covered will include: exploring genetics, eating attitudes, food and fitness behaviors, and environmental and practical tips for making positive and fun dietary changes! In addition, there will be a focus on achieving and maintaining a healthy productive life for individuals and families at all ages. You will learn to use available resources and tools, including reputable free web-based programs to guide you.

Course 2: Advanced Nutrition: Super Foods for the Family..................$249
This course presents details on the science behind super foods, revealing how food can increase your overall performance. By completing this course, you will learn how to shop for the best foods; understand which foods to avoid; the science behind organic foods; and the best super foods to buy on a budget. Based on the latest research, this course covers the legitimate effect food has on performance, colds/flus, chronic disease, memory loss, cancer, and a lot more as well as the antibacterial and home remedy properties of super foods. In addition, the latest food and health trends are covered, helping you to sort fact from fiction.


Melissa Halas-Liang, MA, RD, CDE, is a nationally recognized Registered Dietitian, nutrition educator and wellness expert and is a spokesperson for the California Dietetic Association (CDA). She has over 15 years of experience in nutrition through the lifecycle, teaching, education and curriculum development, clinical/critical care, nutrition management, counseling, media and writing. She holds certificates in Childhood and Adolescent Weight Management and Wellness Coaching.

Melissa is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. She holds a BS in Clinical Dietetics, an MA in Nutrition Education, and was a Certified Nutrition Support Dietitian for 10 years. She also has a certificate for Childhood and Adolescent Weight Management and is a Wellness Coach.

In August 2006, she founded SuperKids Nutrition, Inc. ( and the Super Crew to “Save the world one healthy food at a timeTM.” She provides nutrition articles, resources, learning activities and newsletters to thousands of schools in over 40 states and motivates families and educators to actualize a healthy life.

Melissa is a firm believer in “walking the walk,” and practices living a healthy lifestyle daily. Whether it's helping families eat healthier or inspiring parents, clients and students to be more nutritionally fit, she believes good nutrition plays a vital role in spiritual, physical and mental health.
