This course will provide students with the entry-level knowledge, skills, equipment, and experience to scuba dive. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to engage in entry-level scuba diving activities in local aquatic environments, without direct or indirect supervision by a certified scuba instructor.
Course Topics will include: Scuba diving equipment, physics of diving, medical problems related to diving, use of dive tables and/or dive computers, the diving environment, dive planning, communications, diver assistance, recommended diving practices, procedures for diving from boats and use of a diving logbook. Scuba skills development occurs in pool/confined water, with scuba skills performance in open water.
Grades will be based on class participation, academic completion, quizzes, final exam, and open water skills. Upon successful completion of the course each student will receive an open water diver card from Blue Ridge Mountain Divers and SDI (Scuba Diving International).
* A Scuba quality mask, fins, snorkel, and wetsuit boots are highly recommended, but not mandatory. Other recommended items would be a swimsuit, towel, and longsleeve rash guard type shirt for the pool.
