2019-2020 Staff Senate Chair Alison Joseph
Welcome from the Chair
Welcome to 2019-20 Staff Senate. I am very excited to be chairing the Senate this
year and working with such a dynamic and talented group of senators. These last few
years we’ve implemented several major changes to grow our organizational relevance
and productivity. To better represent staff, we actively seek communication and interaction
with our colleagues. We want staff across the institution to feel welcome, valued,
and empowered, and we strive to help shape the university’s culture to meet that goal.
We want to know what you want, what you are concerned about, and how we can make
Western Carolina University an even better community.
This year the Senate will be focusing on three new initiatives: Reward and Recognition,
Orientation and Onboarding, and Professional Development. In partnership with departments
across campus, we will work to recognize and reward hard-working employees for their
contributions to the campus community. We will seek to improve how we welcome people
to Western Carolina and the ways that employees are introduced to the campus and their
home department. We will also work to improve access to professional development
opportunities for staff across the institution. In addition to these major goals,
we will continue to raise money for the Staff Senate Scholarship which benefits the
children of WCU’s staff members. The demand for that scholarship still far outpaces
our ability to support deserving students. We will also continue to embrace community
service as a core function of Senate activity and advocacy.
Last year the Senate was very active and accomplished a great deal under the leadership
of outgoing chair, Natalie Broom. The Staff Senate Scholarship endowment surpassed
$100,000which will allow us to award four scholarships annually. We will host a celebration
of that achievement on July 23rd from 3:30-5:00 pm, with Chancellor Brown and Provost Morrison-Shetlar, in the UC
Grand Room. Refreshments will be served and all are invited. This year we also deepened
our commitment to community service accumulating more than 440 community service hours
from senators and Senate-led activities. All senators participated in service this
year and we established an officer position to steer this activity moving forward.
In summary, this year we helped provide two-way communication between staff and administration,
engaged in advocacy at the state and campus levels, helped develop and build community
and culture on campus, and helped represent a staff voice in shared campus governance.
We hope you will engage with us in the coming year, so that we can better represent
and support you! Please reach out to any senator, including myself, for a conversation.
