These awards are among the most prestigious honors conferred by Western Carolina University. They are made possible through the generosity of Dr. Paul A. Reid (1902-1982) who twice served as president of the University. Two awards are given each year. One award is for distinguished service by a faculty member; the other is for distinguished service by a member of the administrative staff. The faculty and the staff recipients of the award each receive $5,000 and a plaque commemorating his or her selection. The awards are to be conferred at the Spring General Faculty Meeting and Awards Convocation and recipients are also honored at the spring commencement ceremony.
The selection committee for the Paul A. Reid Distinguished Service Awards shall name annual recipients for a faculty award and an administrative staff award. Nominees for these awards shall be evaluated on the extent and quality of service that contributes to the general welfare of Western Carolina University and enhances its reputation as a regional institution of higher education. The awards will be based on service during the year of the award as well as the sustained cumulative and substantial nature of the individual's efforts over the years.
The committee shall give consideration to formal recognition, honors, or awards that bring distinction to both the individual and the institution. This recognition may be for on-¬campus or off-campus teaching, research, or service. The recognition may be in the form of letters, certificates, etc, that acknowledge outstanding service. Superior teaching is to be considered as one element but should be evaluated in a total context, taking into account the faculty member's involvement in other instructional or professional assignments that contribute to university service.
Distinguished leadership and achievement in programs, projects, or significant professional organizations shall be considered qualifications. They may include principal responsibility for a major grant, contract, or gift to the institution. They may include outstanding performance in a program or project that depends on service beyond normal duty. Election to major office in significant professional organizations at the regional/national level or service on significant state, regional, or national committee(s) also may be considered.
A record of outstanding performance in the individual's university position and/or assignments shall be considered. This consideration may include an evaluation of the degree to which an individual's efforts contribute directly or indirectly to the effective operation of the institution or a unit thereof and ultimately to the achievement of institutional goals and mission.
