From the Chancellor

WCU Campus

In the wake of uncertainty and injustice

I write today with a heavy heart to offer a message of profound and sincere compassion for all those who are suffering pain and frustration in the wake of events that have rocked our communities and our nation. The last few days have been difficult ones for our country. Like you, Dennis and I have watched these moments unfold. We share in the collective heartbreak over the death of George Floyd and the events that have followed.

From the Chief Diversity Officer

To the members of the WCU community, Spring at WCU is my favorite time of the year; not only are we in the season of renewal, but Commencement is nearby, and what better time to celebrate the richness of our student accomplishments. It is indeed a beautiful day. This spring was different. We faced a pandemic that changed our lives and continues to do so. We are still somewhat in disbelief, yet we remain steadfast and resilient, something we live and breathe at Western Carolina University.

Introducing "The Catamount"

We are so excited that our partner, the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad (GSMR) have teamed up to allow WCU alumni, fans, and friends to show their Catamount Pride while riding the rails with the recent unveiling of "The Catamount", a newly repainted and renovated railcar. Dennis and I had a chance to see "The Catamount" first hand...

To the Class of 2020

Today is a special day and one that must be commemorated. Today is the day that we should be celebrating your commencement in the Ramsey Center. I should be shaking your hand in person to the sound of your friends and loved ones coming together in shared celebration of your significant milestone. I can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to celebrating with you in person. This would have been my first spring commencement as Chancellor of Western Carolina University and, believe it or not, I was ready to shake those 2,000 hands!

It's Spring at WCU and We Miss You!

Flowers are blooming on campus and spring is beginning to show itself on campus, but it isn't the same without our students. We want to thank everyone for their patience and support during these uncertain times and we can't wait to have you back on campus!

Alex Gary

Announcing WCU's New Director of Athletics

I write today to announce the appointment of Alex Gary, senior associate athletics director for development at Oregon State University, as the next director of athletics at Western Carolina University. This appointment, which is effective May 1, represents a homecoming of sorts for Alex, who was a student-athlete on the WCU baseball team in the early 2000s.

Rapid Fire Questions with Chancellor Kelli Brown

Dr. Kelli Brown sat down with WCU sophomore Emma Kay to answer some fun, rapid-fire questions about what WCU’s new Chancellor likes. Hot dogs or hamburgers, mountains or the beach, even her favorite color. We probably could guess that one!
