University Communications

The Office of Communications and Public Relations is responsible for the university’s news, media relations, photography and videography functions. The office consists of a team of staff writers, editors, photographers and videographers who work together to communicate university messages and information to the public. The office is the official liaison between the university and all news media, is responsible for photography and video used to promote the university, produces the university magazine and faculty-staff newsletter, issues press releases and answers media inquiries, and maintains news content on the university’s website.

Mission Statement

The Office of Communications and Public Relations promotes and supports Western Carolina University in its efforts to improve individual lives and enhance economic and community development in the region, state and nation. Through external and internal channels, the office uses the full range of print, electronic and emerging media and collaborates with other units of the university to deliver creative, compelling, personalized communications in order to share university messages to stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, taxpayers, and political and community leaders.

In its role of protector of the university’s most important attribute – its public image – the Office of Communications and Public Relations endeavors to be acclaimed by its on-campus colleagues for providing excellent customer service and recognized as a national leader in the implementation of creative, clear, consistent and compelling communications projects.

Media Relations

The News Services/Media Relations team acts as the liaison between the university and the news media, including local, regional and nationwide outlets in print, broadcast and electronic formats. Members of the media interested in stories about WCU and its students, faculty, staff and programs are encouraged to visit WCU's "For the Media” web page. Faculty and staff members wishing to publicize university events, awards and honors, research activities, publications and student achievements through the news media, university website and campus publications should submit a story on our Media Relations page.

Internal Communications

The Office of Communications and Public Relations produces The Reporter, an online newsletter for faculty and staff that is published electronically on a weekly basis during the fall and spring semesters and periodically during the summer months. The publication is designed to share university news, features and announcements that help connect faculty and staff in the endeavor to carry out the university’s mission. The Reporter is delivered via an email containing links to the latest news that sent to faculty and staff. A wide array of other campus resources is available to assist members of the campus community in sharing information about their events and activities.

The magazine is designed to help readers feel connected to the WCU community and to promote its institutional values and commitment to offering opportunities for those who aspire to make a difference in their world. The views and opinions that appear in that publication are not necessarily those of the editorial staff or the official policies of the university.
