Urban Bush Women: Hair & Other Stories

Hair & Other Stories is a multidisciplinary performance that addresses matters of race, gender identity, and economic inequality through the lens of hair, primarily that of African American women.

Renowned NYC based-dance company Urban Bush Women weave dance, music, and text into bold, innovative, and demanding works. Their pieces challenge long-held assumptions about women, people of color, body types, styles of movement, society, history and appropriate content for the stage. Crafted from personal narratives from their communities, kitchens and living rooms, social media and YouTube, Hair & Other Stories debates the center of perceived American “values” and celebrates the persevering narrative of the African Diaspora.
In addition to the ticketed performance on February 6, Urban Bush Women will work in collaboration with the WCU Intercultural Affairs Department to present an interactive dance and leadership program held in the UC Theatre on Monday, February 5 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. This event is free and open to all students on campus. The performance on Tuesday is $5 for students, $20 for f/s, and $25 for the general public.
UBW performs annually in New York City and has toured throughout the United States and in Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America. The Company has been commissioned by presenters nationwide, and includes among its honors a 1992 New York Dance and Performance Award (“Bessie”); the 1994 Capezio Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance; and 1998 and 2004 Doris Duke Awards for New Work from the American Dance Festival. In March 2010, UBW toured South America as part of DanceMotion USAsm, a cultural diplomacy initiative spearheaded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
