Mary Stewart: Apocalypse Series and Other Works

Created in the 1990s in response to the Gulf War, Mary Stewart’s Apocalypse Series offers a civilian’s perspective on the upheavals of war at a time when news reports from the Middle East were reaching the ears of a global public. Her reeling imagery addresses the anxiety and collective sense of loss affecting civilians far beyond the battlefield. This exhibition brings together Stewart’s complete series of eight large-format linocut prints, which were recently added to the Museum’s permanent collection, along with preparatory drawings and complementary works from her Learning series of the same period.

Reception Details
The reception for Mary Stewart: Apocalypse Series and Other Works will take place on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the WCU Fine Art Museum at Bardo Arts Center, 199 Centennial Drive, Cullowhee, NC. This event will include a gallery talk by Mary Stewart, light appetizers, and beverages. Free parking is available.

Museum Hours
