The meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m. Health Insurance
Bob Orr mentioned UNC-G recently held a health insurance information gathering session like the one Roger Turk has proposed the UAC organize. Health Services
Andy Degrove will be invited to the October 2nd Council meeting to present issues/concerns relating to the new Health Services plan. Questions include:
- does the Student Affairs division have the authority to change employee benefits, and
- are services equally available to all employees?
Retention
Each Council member will be given a copy of the Faculty Task Force Report on Retention.
The upcoming visit from the Pappas Consulting Group, Inc. will be mentioned.
The Council will recommend that students be highly involved in all future retention strategy sessions.
Campus Construction
Jesse Lyons will update the Council on the use of the interim shuttle service. He will also mention this service is for everyone on campus, not just students.
Campus Waste and Recycling
Roger Turk outlined Westerns recycling process explaining where paper placed in office recycling bins travels. What security issues should be considered? Many Executive Committee members found this very informative and suggested this process be shared with the entire Council. This led to conversation regarding the security of social security numbers on campus. Faculty and Staff Benefits Committee
It was proposed that the University Advisory Council form a new committee to deal with faculty and staff benefits. Since this issue does not effect all four campus constituencies, the Executive Committee recommends that a joint committee be formed with members from the Faculty Senates Benefits Committee and the Staff Forums Salary and Benefits Sub-Committee. Student Academic Appeals Procedures
Currently there are three different descriptions of the appeals process Student Handbook, Faculty Handbook and the Western Catalog.
Nancy Dillard shared that a committee has been created to make sure the same message/procedures are outlined in each publication.
Fred Hinson recommended the entire process be reviewed.
July 4th Holiday
Fred Hinson reported there will be no classes on July 4th or 5th 2002. The Calendar Committee recommends employees give up one Christmas holiday, so the University can be closed on July 4th. Employees may use a personal leave day to make up for the holiday moved from Christmas break.
