University Advisory Council
April 9, 2002

Members present: Bob Orr, David Whitaker, Jan Gilbert, Debie Connelly, Litta Adams, Janet Dickinson, Nancy Dillard, Bill Haggard, Fred Hinson, Casey Hurley, John Ritchie, Lisa Scruggs, Newton Smith, Saretta Tatum, Roger Turk, Kathleen Wright and Tori Ellison, recorder

The meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m.

Bob Orr welcomed Thomas Franke, Chief Information Officer.

The Council was briefed on campus activities.

  1. Faculty Senate Update, Casey Hurley
    • Restructuring – The Faculty Senate will transition to its new structure during the 2002-2003 academic year.
  1. Student Government Update, Saretta Tatum
    • SGA elections will be held from 8:00 a.m. on April 22nd through 5:00 p.m. on April 23rd.
  1. Staff Forum, John Ritchie
    • Elections
    • Budget Update from Vice Chancellor Wooten
    • Salary Equity Adjustment
    • E-Mail Access Form
  1. Administrative Update, Chancellor Bardo
    • Look for new helmets and uniforms on the Catamount football team.
    • A ribbon cutting was held on Wednesday, April 3rd, for the Center for Rapid Prototyping, which is located in the Belk Building.
    • Phase I for the athletic facilities has been approved. Building will begin soon on the West stands.
    • A Greek Village proposal will be presented to the Board of Trustees at their June meeting.
    • Planning has started for the student recreational facility.
    • Budget

There is not a lot of updated information being disseminated on the budget situation. Since it is an election year, budget cuts are not expected to exceed 4%.

The following slate has been proposed for the 2002-2003 academic year.

Career Banding

Lorri Allison and Kathy Wong presented information on career banding which is defined as the vertical and horizontal collapsing of classes into more generic classes with wider pay ranges where the development of career paths is a fundamental design consideration.
