Executive Committee Minutes
January 29, 2002

Members present: Debie Connelly, Nancy Dillard, Jan Gilbert, Fred Hinson, Bob Orr, Roger Turk, David Whitaker and Tori Ellison, recorder

The meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m.

Election Procedures

David Whitaker presented the election process he, Newt Smith, Chloe Little and Litta Adams have created. He will bring their recommendations to the full Council at the February 12th meeting.

Student Academic Appeals Procedure

The faculty Senate adopted the following procedure at their January 16th meeting.

Undergraduate students who wish to appeal an assigned grade should follow, in order, the academic appeal procedure: 1) appeal verbally to the instructor; 2) appeal in writing to the instructor's department head; 3) appeal in writing to the dean of the instructor's college; 4) appeal in writing to the Academic Problems Committee as outlined below. Any request by a student for a change must be submitted to the instructor within thirty-five days after the end of final exams.Undergraduate students who have other problems related to instruction are encouraged to discuss those problems and possible solutions with the instructor or student's academic advisor. If this is not possible, the student should talk to the department head or appropriate dean.

Campus Beautification Day

The Staff Forum has made this project a priority.

Parking and Shuttle Service

Fred Hinson suggested promoting the campus shuttle service in light of campus construction. Several parking lots are now restricted due to construction activities limiting parking to parameter lots. An agenda item was added for Council discussion.

Health Benefits Event

Keith Styles has been working diligently on this event. Vice Chancellor Clifton Metcalf has been contacted for his recommendations on who from the Office of the President should be invited. Vice Chancellor Chuck Wooten has contacted Ron Penny about attending. This event will include a luncheon as well as Q&A time for faculty and staff members.

Communications Committee Update

Deb Connelly and her committee have requested reports from all university governance groups to be included in the February newsletter. In addition, this newsletter will include a feature about the new shuttle service and encourage use by all faculty, staff and students.

Leadership Committee Update

Jan Gilbert announced that the Strategic Planning Workshop for Leadership Activities at Western will take place February 5th from 12:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. in HFR 510.
