Executive Committee Minutes
October 30, 2001
540 HFR Administration

Members present: Debie Connelly, Nancy Dillard, Jan Gilbert, Fred Hinson, Jesse Lyons, Bob Orr, Roger Turk and Tori Ellison, recorder

The meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m.

Leadership Committee, Strategic Planning

Special guests:

  • Dr. Bruce Berger, Faculty Member, Business Marketing & Law and CEO, Integrated Management Resources (IMR)

  • Dr. Le Von Wilson, Department Head, Marketing & Business Law

  • Mr. Chris Dahlquist, Training & Development Coordinator, WCU Human Resources

Having established the WCU Leadership Institute, the Leadership Committee is now searching for ways to take leadership training at Western to "the next level." This will involve defining Western’s leadership philosophy and developing ways to cultivate that style through training initiatives. Bruce, LeVon and Chris have agreed to assist with this process. Through his business, Integrated Management Resources, Bruce conducts several leadership retreats a year for a variety of organizations. He has volunteered to conduct such a retreat for the UAC Leadership and Executive Committees.

The direction for Western’s leadership philosophy will come from Chancellor Bardo. Casey Hurley will be meeting with the Chancellor about this issue in early November.

The Executive Committee supports the idea, but suggests a few steps be taken before coordinating the retreat. These include:

1) Casey Hurley’s conversation with and feedback from the Chancellor,

2) possibly a second conversation between Bob Orr and the Chancellor, and

3) meeting with Noelle Kehrberg who chairs Western’s Strategic Planning Task Force. (It is imperative that the Leadership Committee’s mission statement and leadership initiatives communicate the same ideals/message as the University’s.)

Unfinished Business

July 4th Holiday

Fred Hinson reminded the Committee that he needs feedback regarding the July 4th holiday as soon as possible. He must submit this information to the Office of the President by the end of November.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:45 p.m.
