DECEMBER SCHOLARSHIPS

BRYSON C ITY WOMANÕS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP – must attend a two- or four-year college, have strong academic record, leadership skills, extra-curricular involvement plus financial need; amount - $1000; December 1 deadline.

 

THE ROBERTSON SCHOLARSHIP – must apply to Duke University and/or UNC-Chapel Hill and will be considered on the basis of the following six scholarship criteria: behavior that is grounded in strong ethical principles, superior academic achievement and intellectual curiosity, demonstrated leadership, active commitment to helping others and to community service, courage, and a collaborative spirit; amount - $140,000 over four years at either Duke or UNC-CH that will include a computer and summer enrichment experience; December 1 deadline for submitting supplemental materials (applications & details on their website: www.robertsonscholars.org).

 

DOGWOOD CRAFTERS SCHOLARSHIP – must live within 75 miles radius of the Dogwood Crafters Store, located in Dillsboro, and planning to major in an arts or craft area of study plus have financial need; amount - $500; December 1 through March 1 deadline to apply.

 

DUKE ENERGY SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIP – must son or daughter of eligible employee, retiree, or deceased employee of Duke Energy; (must request scholarship application from the local personnel office or by contacting Diane Wilson at 713-627-4608 or e-mailing her at dswilson@duke-energy.com); amount – $1000 up to $5000 per year; December 1 deadline to request scholarship application.

 

NATIONAL PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP – must be a member of a Presbyterian Church (USA) and attend a college related to Presbyterian Ch. (USA); amount – varies from $500 to $1400; December 1 deadline. 

 

WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS – must apply to Wake Forest University; be in the top 1-3% of class with 1400 SAT score and have extraordinary achievements beyond the local level; PRESIDENTIAL – must be talented in music, art, drama, theatre, leadership, debate, dance, writing, entrepreneurial activity or community service; JACK BUCHANAN - must have financial need and academic ability, with preference given to students from western North Carolina planning a business major; amount – varies accordingly to need; December 1 deadline; scholarship applications available online at: www.wfu.edu, click on Admissions, then Merit-based Scholarships (must also complete CSS PROFILE  at www.collegeboard.com).

 

 

HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP – must apply to High Point University and have a 3.0 GPA+, 1100 SAT V&M scores or 24 ACT scores, and be involved in high school activities and leadership; amount – varies from $4,500 up to $14,710; December 1 deadline.

 

 

 

SAE ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP – (sponsored by The Society of Automotive Engineers) must be majoring in engineering with SAT or ACT scores in the 90th percentile in both math and verbal plus have a 3.5+ GPA; amount – varies from $500 to $5000; December 1 deadline and must include a $5.00 processing fee. SALEM COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP – must be a female student who is accepted to Salem College with a 3.5 GPA, 1100 SAT or 24 ACT score; amount - $8000; December 1 deadline (applications available on their web site: www.salem.edu).

 

QUEENS UNIVERSITY OF CHARLOTTE PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP – must have applied to Queens and have superior scholastic and leadership credentials; amount – varies from $7500 to $10,500; December 1 deadline. 

 

BURGER KING SCHOLARSHIP -  must have 2.5 GPA, work 15 hours per week (applicants are not required to be employed at Burger King although Burger King employees may be eligible to apply), maintain good conduct and attitude in school and on the job, participate in community service or co-curricular activities, have an employer recommendation and demonstrate financial need; school scholarship committee will nominate one senior from interested students applying; amount - $1000; December 1 deadline (on-line application at their web site: www.sms.scholarshipamerica.org/bkscholars).

 

GREENSBORO COLLEGE HONORS PROGRAM, FINE ARTS AND METHODIST SCHOLARSHIPS – must apply and be accepted to Greensboro College, have 3.5+ GPA and 1150 SAT scores for the Honors College, schedule an audition date for the Fine Arts Scholarship by calling 1-800-346-8226, ext. 242, or be a Methodist Church member for Methodist Scholarship (more details can be obtained from their web site: www.gborocollege.edu); amount: varies from $8000 to $22,000 per year; December 1 deadline.

 

JOHNSON & WALES UNIVERSITY STUDENT LEADER SCHOLARSHIP – (sponsored by the College of Business) must apply to J&W and be recognized as a leader in school or community; amount - $3500 to $7500; December 1 deadline.

 

JOHNSON & WALES UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL RECIPE CONTEST SCHOLARSHIP – must submit original family dinner recipe with color photo of prepared entrˇe; amount - $1000 to full cost to attend J&W; December 1 deadline.

 

U.S. COAST GUARD ACADEMY – must be interested in attending this military academy to become a professional military officer for the Coast Guard; no congressional appointments are required; amount – full four-year scholarship; December 15 deadline. (Contact www.cga.edu for more details.)

 

 

 

NORTH CAROLINA ASSOCIATION OF RESCUE AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES INC. SCHOLARSHIP – must be a child of a member, retired member or deceased member of a Rescue Squad or EMS service and plan to attend a two- or four-year college in North Carolina; amount – four-year college $12,000 over 4 years; two-year college $2000 over 2 years; December 15 deadline to local Rescue Squad or EMS service department.

 

GEORGE ERWIN PATTON HORTICULTURE SCHOLARSHIP – must apply to Haywood Community College, have a 2.75 GPA and study the Horticulture Associate Degree Program (1st preference will be given to a resident of Macon County and 2nd priority to s resident of western North Carolina); scholarship may be given to a student who desires to enroll in the Natural Resource Management Program at Western Carolina University or Landscape Architecture Program at N.C. State University; amount - $2500; December 15 deadline.

 

ROBERT HOWELL PANNELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – must attend Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College and major in residential carpentry program; 1st preference will be given to students of western North Carolina who demonstrates financial need; amount - $500; December 15 deadline or until awarded.

 

CHIEF JOHN ALFRED TAHQUETTE SCHOLARSHIP – (former principal chief) must be an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, planning to attend a college, university or technical school located 250 miles outside of Cherokee; amount – tuition, room and board; December 15 deadline.

 

AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP – must be well-rounded student committed to making a difference and have demonstrated achievement at a job, sport, or extracurricular activity; amount – varies up to $1500; December 15 deadline (application available at their web site: www.axa-achievement.com).

 

AUBREY LEE BROOKS SCHOLARSHIP – must reside in Swain County, be accepted to attend UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Greensboro, or N.C. State University, have a strong academic record, excellent character, leadership qualities, and financial need as determined by CSS Financial Aid PROFILE (at www.collegeboard.com); amount -  $7300 each year for four years; December 15 through January 15 deadline to register for CSS Financial Aid PROFILE through the link on the web site: cfnc.org/brooks (there will be a charge for service and if parents have not completed taxes for 2007, they may estimate taxes by using tax information for 2006 if yearly earnings for 2007 and 2006 are similar (please make sure Brooks Scholarship Code # 0062 plus collegeÕs CSS PROFILE Code # 5496 for NCSU or # 5816 for UNC-CH are included (UNC-G does not require this step).  (Final deadline to submit scholarship application is February 1.)

 

 

UNC-GREENSBORO MERIT SCHOLARSHP – must be accepted to UNC-G and have a 3.5+ GPA and 1200 Verbal and Math SAT or 27 ACT score; amount – varies from $2500 to $12,000; January 4 scholarship deadline (must apply online at www.uncg.edu/fia/meritawards).

 

N.C. HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CLARY MEDAL/SCHOLARSHIP  - must have participated on two or more athletic teams at SCHS, have 3.2+ GPA with strong in-school and out-of-school extra-curricular activities record, plus submit an essay to include the following: how athletic participation has impacted his/her life, how athletics are tied to education and oneÕs views on sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, honesty and integrity; amount - $1000; one female and one male nominee will be selected by schoolÕs scholarship committee from interested seniors submitting applications; December 20 deadline.

 

EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY MERIT SCHOLARSHIP – must apply to ECU have 1800+ SAT score (29 ACT). 3.5 GPA & ranked in the upper 5% of class; amount – varies from $1000 to $20,000; complete scholarship application by December 31 (postmark); applications online at: www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/admissions/apps.cfm.

 

UNC-CHAPEL HILL KENAN MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP – must be admitted to UNC-CH, plan to major in music, and submit scholarship audition request form at www.music.unc.edu; amount – varies; January 1 deadline.
