Day Five:
July 9: Powell to Wilderness Gateway Campground (46 miles)
Written by Tyler West:
This day's ride was great. 46 miles downhill. However, because of the wind we were pedaling the whole way. The best and most memorable time of the day was Jerry Johnson Hot Springs. To get to the Hot Springs we crossed a long, swinging bridge over the Lochsa River. Once we reached a large, open area we knew we were at the Hot Springs. The water was incredibly warm. I probably could have stayed there all day. Jerry Johnson lived at the Hot Springs in the late 1800s. His wife, an Indian, believed that if you eat the liver of your enemies you would take on their courage. His wife later was killed by Indians - Jerry Johnson went crazy and hunted Indians to eat their livers.
