WE LEAD is the umbrella name for the comprehensive student leadership enhancement and development program at Western Carolina University. The program provides opportunities for students to gain and hone leadership skills through the use of liberal studies learning outcomes. Using the Social Chang Model of Leadership Development as its framework, WE LEAD is founded on the belief that leadership comes from a place other than position-based power – leadership is an outgrowth of generosity of spirit, a mindset that applies ideas and abilities of individuals and groups to create social benefits.

WE LEAD offers diverse programming including event advising, retreat planning, advisor training, officer transition, theory, group dynamics and workshops tailored to specific needs or requests. In addition to leadership programs, more than 100 student organizations serve as leadership laboratories allowing students to enhance and develop their leadership skills.

Freshmen Leadership Institute - This leadership opportunity is offered to small groups of incoming freshmen who will be chosen through an application process and interview during their orientation visit. This leadership tool is located on-line and allows students twenty-four hour access. These can be used for admission processes to graduate school and job searches.

Human Potential Retreat - The goals of the Human Potential Retreat are: to identify potential leaders (freshman and sophomores), not currently serving as campus leaders;

FLIP – Freshmen Leaders in Progress (FLIP) strives to provide an environment and community of support for freshmen to gain leadership skills through campus involvement and exposure to new experiences and ideas. The counselors and co-chairs endeavor to assist the freshmen in their transition to Western Carolina University by providing opportunities for involvement on campus, service-learning, academic excellence, and creating new friendships through social interaction. Lost and Found

Searching for the X! Lost and Found will build your group cohesion in a setting like no other in Cullowhee. Panther Town Valley is known as the Yosemite of the East, with large granite walls, waterfalls, and rare plants. It is a bowl shaped valley with distinct features that your group will use together as a team to find the X using only a compass and a map with no trail markings. Expect to spend about 6 to 8 hours, all day, using compass settings and backtracking to find the secret waterfall in this amazing valley. Price: $18 per person includes equipment, transportation, instruction & lunch.

Lost Guide

Up the river without a guide! It's up to your team to negotiate the rapids on the Nantahala River without a guide. Your group will practice first on a nearby lake then the instructors will follow you as your team works together to meet the challenge of the river. This is an all day adventure. Expect about an hour on the lake and 3 hours on the river. Price: $25 per person Includes equipment, transportation, instruction & lunch.

Build It

Spend a half-day with the experienced and trained Base Camp Staff in a leadership program designed especially for your group. Spend time with icebreakers, initiatives, team building exercises, and fine-tuning your group dynamics. You tell us your goals, and we will design the program to meet those goals! Challenge your group to not just do leadership, Build it! Cost is $7 per person for a half-day of fun.

Base Camp Cullowhee would also be happy to send over our employees for a 1-hour class for free!

Low Challenge Course

Coming soon to WCU's Campus! Our administration is serious about bringing you a "low challenge course". This is a perfect addition to any leadership program. Low challenge courses build teamwork through a series of activities. Can we get more vague? No! We want you to know that these activities can address most any leadership goal. Call Leigh Jackson at BCC, 828.227.3466 for more information. We look forward to this new development and will keep you posted.
