Using a Community Organizing Approach to Implement Environmental Strategies in and around the College Campus

A Recommended Approach
· SPARC Approach: Based on NIAAA’s recommended strategies in April 2002 Report:

“A Call to Action: Changing the Culture of Drinking at U.S. Colleges”

·NIAAA Recommendations:

-Culture change: Must occur in order to effectively reduce high risk drinking that leads to alcohol-related consequences

-Environmental Management: Helps change culture by changing elements of the campus and community environments that contribute to high risk drinking

-Campus and Communities: Must collaborate to make the changes effective and lasting Partnerships: One of the most effective vehicles for facilitating campus and community collaboration

Facing an Alcohol-Related Crisis – Getting Assistance

Be aware of the signs of possible alcohol abuse by your own or friends (e.g., lower grades, never available or reluctant to talk with you, unwilling to talk about activities with friends, trouble with campus authorities, serious mood changes)

If you believe you have a problem with alcohol or your friends are having a problem with alcohol, do not blame them or yourself, but find appropriate treatment.

If you are concerned about you alcohol consumption or that of a friend, have them check out www.alcoholscreening.org for information about ongoing screening for problems with alcohol.

Pay your friends an unexpected visit. Ask to meet their friends. Attend Parent’s Weekend and other campus events open to parents.

Continue to stay actively involved in the life of your friends. Friends help Friends may SMART Choices!
