Community Building Efforts
WCU actively promotes a campus culture of civility and respect. These efforts are
informed by the WCU Community Creed which frames the campus communities’ overarching
expectations of and for students, faculty and staff. The Creed promotes the core values
of integrity, respect, community responsibility, engagement and spirit.
Community building efforts in this area include Safe Zone, the Red Zone awareness
campaign and the Respect campaign:
- Safe Zone is a training program meant to create advocacy and support on issues related to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning community.
- The Red Zone is recognized in higher education as the time during the first 6-8 weeks of classes each fall when students are at greater risk of unwanted sexual contact. The Red Zone awareness campaign is run each fall and works to inform and educate students and works to promote healthy relationships.
-
The Respect campaign is new for the fall 2010 semester. A goal of this initiative is to encourage community
members to be respectful of others in a diverse community and to be a leader in appropriately
addressing situations where insensitivity is displayed.
