Dr. Sam Miller was named Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at Western Carolina University in June 2007.  He serves as the chief student affairs officer with responsibility for the following departments:  Admissions, Campus Recreation & Wellness, Counseling & Psychological Services, Kneedler Child Development Center, Intercultural Affairs, Orientation, Residential Living, Student Community Ethics, Talent Search, University Center, and University Health Services.

Dr. Miller began his student affairs career in 1989 working in residence life and with orientation at the University of Alabama.  From 1996 to 1999, he served as Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Virginia, where he worked on student technology initiatives and supported the student-run Honor system, the student judiciary system and student government.

In 1999 Dr. Miller was appointed Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Connecticut where he served as the chief budget, personnel and labor relations officer.  Dr. Miller also served as interim Director of Campus Activities and the Student Union from 1999-2000.  He was promoted in 2004 to Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and supervised Residential Life, Dining Services, Disability Services, as well as on-going responsibility as student affair’s chief labor relations officer.  As an adjunct-Associate Professor in the Neag School of Education, Dr. Miller was Co-Director of the Higher Education and Student Affairs masters program from 2003-2007.

As an undergraduate student at the University of Alabama, Dr. Miller first became interested in college films.  He pursued this interest as a Virginia doctoral student, where he began the work of compiling a comprehensive college film database and started using clips from these films in his work with college students.  In 2000 he launched the College Films Database website that features a comprehensive listing of films and movies that focus on various aspects of higher education.  Having encountered hundreds of awful college movies, Dr. Miller continues his quest for the perfect college film and shares this misguided passion presenting nationally on the subject.
