Sophomore Monthly Checklist

Everyone's journey through college, and life for that matter, is different.  However, in order to graduate on time and be prepared for your next steps, there are certain tasks you need to accomplish during your sophomore year in college. The following lists is by no means meant to be all encompassing; it's meant to get you thinking, and help you meet your future on solid ground.

August 

  • Use MyCat to be sure your tuition and fees are paid.
  • Find a job on campus at careers.wcu.edu
  • Meet with your academic advisor to develop an academic plan.  Review your academic plan with your advisor and continue to establish a working relationship with him/her; meet with him/her regularly.
  • Keep in mind about tutoring, writing, and other services that can assist you as needed.
  • Consider getting involved in a student organization on campus, such as one that supports your major/career, and/or one that fits your personal interests. 
  • Take the time to get to know your new professors.

January

  • Keep in regular contact with present and past professors.
  • Spend time researching scholarships for next year.
  • Start figuring out what courses you might want to take for the upcoming Fall semester.

September

  • Update your resume for upcoming career fairs. Get it critiqued beforehand; have someone look it over for you.
  • Use MyCat to run a degree audit before registration.
  • Consider service opportunities for the year… be involved as much as your schedule allows.
  • Make an appointment with the career services office to find out what opportunities exist within your major.
  • Use AdvisorTrac to make an appointment with your advisor for advising day. Visit the Advising Center in the OneStop if you need additional help or aren’t sure who your advisor is.

February

  • If applicable, renew your FAFSA by March 1st.
  • Use AdvisorTrac to make an appointment with your advisor for advising day.
  • Discuss living options for next year with your family and roommates.

October

  • Join OrgSync in order to find out about involvement opportunities on campus.
  • Consider ways to learn more and connect to your prospective career field (such as informational interviews).
  • Consider exploring different academic areas of interest by adding a minor, a certificate program, or the like.
  • Consider studying abroad; if you have already made the decision to study abroad, then complete the planning steps for your study abroad experience.

March

  • Visit the Writing and Learning Commons to polish your writing skills.
  • If interested, start to look into a summer internship or summer job.

November

  • It’s not too late to visit the Catamount Tutoring Center if you need help with classes.
  • Relax with friends and family during the Thanksgiving holiday break.

April 

  • Finalize summer plans
  • Participate in end-of-the-year activities
  • If you are taking summer classes elsewhere, talk to your advisor to make certain credits will transfer into your major.

December

  • Take time to de-stress.
  • Use winter break to research opportunities for a summer internship or job.

May

  • Take time to reflect on your accomplishments so far and what you want to accomplish next.
  • Establish expectations if you are living at home after being away.
  • Begin your co-op, summer job or internship.
