Campus Involvement
• How can I find out what events are occurring on campus this week?
For events that are occurring at WCU, check out the event calendar. You can also check out what student organizations are doing at https://orgsync.com/24496/calendar.
Careers
• How can I find an internship in my career/major field?
Start with your own department; they often have resources concerning an internship.
Your advisor can often point you in the right direction as well. Check out the Career Center's Internships/Co-ops page which has some resources as well. Finally, if you have a specific employer in mind,
check out their website or get in touch with them. Most are always looking for interns.
• I want to look at what career opportunities exist for me. Where do I start?
A great way to start is to make an appointment with a career counselor. They will help you determine what jobs exactly you're looking for, and where you
can start. While there are a variety of job searching websites available, there are
usually some that are in your major field. Contact the Career Center for more information.
• I don't have much interview experience. Can I get some practice?
Sure! Remember, interviewing is a skill, and like everything else, takes practice.
The good news is that the Career Center offers mock interviewing. This is a great
opportunity to practice your skills before you go to the real thing. Consider having
it taped; though it may sound intimidating, it's a great opportunity to improve upon
your weaknesses before you head to the real thing!
• When's a good time to actually start applying for jobs after I graduate?
An important thing to note here is that you should actually apply for jobs before
you graduate! Typically, your last semester is your last opportunity to get started.
Even though you haven't graduated yet, employers will know that to be the case, as
it will be reflected on your resume. In any case, the earlier you start, the better
off you will be.
Graduate School
• I'm interested in going to graduate school. How do I start the process?
To begin with, make sure you start the process early, preferably during the Fall semester
of your junior year. Start to decide what program(s) you may want to do, and what
schools offer those programs. Some schools require you to take entrance exams, such
as the GRE or GMAT. Have an idea of when application deadlines are; this will help
you determine when you should take such tests, and how long you have to study for
them.
• My graduate school requires an entrance exam. When should I take it?
This is similar to when you took the SAT in high school. You'll want to try to take
it either during the Spring semester of your junior year, or at the end of the Fall
semester of your senior year. Just make sure you'll get your scores back well in advance
of any application deadlines. Keep in mind that you don't want to try to take it more
than once! This is because your school will be able to see how many times you've taken
it, and what the score was for each of them.
• What's more important to grad schools... a high GPA, or high test scores?
This varies considerably based on the school itself, and to the program which you
are applying for. Typically, the program's website will have this information, and
may even give you an idea as to what the average GPA and/or test scores of what past
applicants are. If not, contact the program director; he/she will be more than happy
to provide you with this information.
• How do I study for my entrance exam?
You can use our GRE workshop site. The library also has study materials you can check out, which are typically free
of charge.
Academic
• How can I be sure I'll be able to graduate on time?
Talk to your advisor to insure you're on the right path to graduation. Run a degree
audit in MyCat to determine what classes you still need to take. It is important to
remember that not all classes may be offered during the semester you want them to
be. Make sure you talk to your advisor about this; he/she can tell you when a particular
class will/will not be offered.
