We envision a dynamic department that engages every student and member of the Western Carolina University community by offering diverse opportunities for the development and growth of the whole person. In doing so, we will become a national leader in the field of recreation and wellness education.
Mission
The mission of the Department of Campus Recreation & Wellness is to create a campus-wide culture of wellness by providing programs, services, and facilities for individuals to engage and sustain the active process of healthy living.

Leadership
The staff of CRW believes in their role as fitness and wellness educators and understands that we learn most effectively when our experiences are positive and are lead by role models. We are committed to providing the best quality possible, and maintain the attitude of being an "opportunistic" problem solver while maintaining policies and procedures pertaining to safety, security, and the well-being of each individual.
Community
The staff of CRW understands and appreciates that individual competence will lead to feeling good. We also appreciate that being part of a community leads to a spiritual orientation, and this helps us to accept the positive and negative aspects of our lives as we strive to be positive citizens. We believe in a universal (multicultural) approach that is student-oriented, cognizant of the importance of diversity, aware of our role as a leader in co-curricular learning, and strive to be as inclusive as possible.
Fun
CRW believes in play for th sake of play and that people learn best when having fun while still maintaining a safe environment.
Personal Development
The staff of CRW believes strongly in being purpose driven while maintaining balance in the execution of excellent programs for users, facility management, fiscal integrity, and strategic planning. CRW additionally commits to development of staff through training.
