The A.K. Hinds University Center, located on the main part of campus, is just one of four main spaces maintained and operated by the UC staff.
Constructed for $1.4 million, the University Center was originally dedicated on May 1968 and renovated in 1997. The newly completed $5.3 million expansion added another 34,000 square feet of space, and opened in January 2003. Today, the UC is 82,500 square feet and is home to meeting rooms, student clubs and organizations, club space, a grand ballroom, a movie theater, and more. Also located inside the UC is a showroom reserved specifically for showcasing student art. The UC lawn and central plaza areas are also maintained by the UC, as is the Picnic Area which is located near the softball field. In addition, the UC also has a food court where, students, faculty, staff, and visitors can enjoy dining options like Einstein’s Bagels, Papa John’s Pizza, and Chic fil-A, and Residential Living’s student mailroom is located on the second floor.
The Blue Ridge Conference Center, a space of 3,400 square feet, is located in the newly established Blue Ridge Residence Hall and is used for meetings and conferences.
The Old Student Union, located on the upper part of campus, is a space of 4,500 square feet and houses our student media groups including TV62, the Western Carolinian, and WCAT.
Additionally, the University Center is responsible for Brown Building, also located on the upper part of campus. At 11,650 square feet, Brown houses Base Camp Cullowhee, the university’s outdoor programming hub, and the Cats Den, a leisure space for students and the WCU community which, throughout the year, hosts a variety of parties and events and has ping pong tables, pool tables, and arcade games located inside.
Most University Center spaces are available for use by WCU students, faculty, and staff but must be reserved in advance through the University Center’s Information and Reservations Coordinator. A variety of setups and options are available for many of the spaces. The Picnic Area is available for reservation by both on and off-campus community members.
