2013 First Ascent ADVENTURE Dates: |
First Ascent ADVENTURE is a small group (6-12 people) outdoor activity sampler. Each
day, you'll participate in a different activity, covering the best that the area has
to offer. The following activities are included: Whitewater Rafting, Rock Climbing,
Swimming Hole Hike, Lake Canoe Trip, and a Peak Ascent of one of the tallest mountains
in the East. This trip is run road trip style, you'll leave campus on the first day
and camp each day in tents at a different Forest Service Campground or designated
road side camping spot, offering at least one shower during the 6 day trip. For each
day's trip, you just bring what you need for the day and leave the rest in the van.

- Learn strategies for success when being immersed in new environments (outdoors as a metaphor for college life) - LEARN
Trip Staff:
This trip is lead by a team of of the most experienced student staff of Base Camp
Cullowhee. These professional staff have gone through a rigorous training regimen
including wilderness emergency medicine, training trips, and apprenticeship to qualify
to work these trips. Many of them are former First Ascent participants themselves.
In addition to the staff that accompany the entire trip, many days are also visited
by additional staff to help with the technical aspects of some trips.
Cost: $225 (early registration) $250 (late registration) due with trip registration.

*Minimum enrollment is 6 people per trip, Maximum of 12 per group.
**Cancellation Policy: There are no full refunds once registered. %50 of
your registration fee is refundable if you cancel before 2 weeks before your trip.
Within 2 weeks of the trip, no refund will be issued.
Dates: July 12-17: Early Registration Ends June 21st, Final Registration Ends July 5th
August 9-14: Early Registration Ends July 19th, Final Registration Ends
August 2nd.
Sample Schedule: *May change depending on weather or other local conditions
Day 1 - Arrive on campus (am), welcome lunch, gear and food issue, go over expectations,
set goals, etc. Pack the van and transport to first campsite.
Day 2 - Whitewater Rafting on the Nantahala River, 9miles of class II-III whitewater,
camp nearby
Day 3 - Canoe across Bear Lake to the headwaters waterfall, ample opportunity for
swimming, drive to trailhead for following day, camp
Day 4 - Swimming Hole Hike, pack lunch in your day backpack and hike into our favorite
swimming holes for lunch and a chilly dip, camp at Forest Service Campground
Day 5 - Rock Climbing, load climbing gear into your day backpack and hike a short
distance to a remote rock climbing location, camp at trailhead
Day 6 - Peak Ascent, lace up your hiking boots for a challenging 3 mile ascent of
one of the tallest mountains in the East. The view is worth it! Return to campus,
clean gear and depart.
What experience do I need?
None, your instructors will teach and provide you with the skills to make "life in
the woods" fun. No worries. Already have experience? Excellent, share you knowledge
with others and learn a few new tricks from Base Camp's super-experienced backcountry
gurus.
