STAFF FORUM SCHOLARSHIP

Staff Forum Congratulates Scholarship Winner Jer-Mayne White

Western Carolina University ’s Staff Forum congratulates Jer-Mayne White, the first recipient of the Staff Forum Scholarship, and her mother, Angela Smith, technology support analyst at WCU. Jer-Mayne is a sophomore forensic anthropology major from Asheville, and her mother, Angela, has worked at Western for two years.

“Cullowhee has always been my home away from home,” said Jer-Mayne, who remembers visiting campus as a child with extended family who worked at WCU long before her mother joined the staff. After graduating from Asheville High School, she attended Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga., and began studying biology and psychology. Her goal was—and continues to be—to work in the field of forensic anthropology, a goal she set in seventh grade after seeing a National Geographic special about the body farm in Tennessee.

When her mother told her about Western’s plans to open a similar outdoor forensic anthropology research station, White became intrigued with WCU and the forensic anthropology program, and applied for admission. “The whole idea of a small personal school offering such educational amenities at an affordable price was amazing.”

Angela said she is proud and excited that her daughter is a student at Western. “I think our program here at WCU really directly offers what she needs to pursue the career she has been interested in for years, and I’m excited that she’s chosen to further her education at the university where I work. We’re thankful to the many people at Western who helped make this scholarship possible. It means a lot to both of us, and we know it will mean a lot to future recipients, too.”

HELP GROW THE SCHOLARSHIP

Staff Forum is an organization at WCU that represents the interests and concerns of all SPA and EPA non-faculty staff members.

A fund to create a scholarship that would benefit the family of WCU staff members began in 2003 with a $100 contribution from an anonymous Sylva resident.

Through fundraisers and contributions, the fund has grown to $10,000 – enough to generate a $500 annual scholarship for the family of SPA and non-faculty EPA staff members.

Staff Forum would like to grow the endowed fund to $20,000, which would generate an additional $500 annually for scholarships. Recipients are selected based on their involvement in activities, scholastic performance, financial need and personal essays about educational and career goals.

Check out the Staff Forum’s home on the Web at www.wcu.edu/stforum. Find out how you can support the scholarship fund by visiting campaign.wcu.edu or contacting Brett Woods by phone at 227-7124 or by e-mail at bwoods@wcu.edu. Contributions can be made through monthly payroll deduction.
