The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at Western Carolina University - Summer Institute 2003 - Participants

There were 32 faculty participants, 5 additional faculty served as facilitators for the five focal teams, Dr. John Habel helped coordinate the planning and the CFC’s Debra Randleman was the key person in organizing the planning and completing the many details and tasks needed, along with the help of other CFC staff, student workers and a summer student intern.

Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar CFC director introduced Chancellor Dr. Bardo who gave the welcoming address.

Besides the actual work done at the Institute, each faculty participant makes a commitment to apply what was learned at the Institute to one or more of her or his classes, and to share that learning with WCU colleagues in one of a variety of ways.

All participants received a booklet on student learning and there were also some copies of Dr. Morrison-Shetlar’s book, Teaching Creatively: Ideas in Action, and a book on the scholarship of teaching and learning, Opening Lines, were also given away.

Funding for the SITL was received from Academic Affairs, making the Institute a reality. It is the hope of the CFC that it will become an annual event. The announcement by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Collings, that there would be another Institute in 2004 was well received. Essentially, the Summer Institute was also seen as the kick-off event in the implementation of the SoTL at WCU initiative.
