CULLOWHEE Roberson High, Carolina Day and North Buncombe Middle schools captured team titles Thursday, April 7, at Western Carolina University's 35 th Annual High School Mathematics Contest.

Nearly 500 of the region's top mathematics students representing 31 schools from across the region competed.

The Carolina Day School team, sponsored by Candy Hardy, won the 1A-2A division with a mean score of 25.95. Second place went to Owen High School , sponsored by Anthony Sapp, with a mean score of 22.95. North Henderson High School, sponsored by Sharon Whitted, posted a mean score of 21.17 for a third-place finish.

Roberson High School, sponsored by Rob Wilcher and Shirley Glover, won the 3A-4A division with a mean score of 27.8. North Buncombe High School, sponsored by Archie Benton, took second place with a mean score of 23.69, while Reynolds High School, sponsored by Bill Punshon, finished third with a mean score of 23.48.

The junior high team title went to North Buncombe Middle School, sponsored by Julie Brown, with a mean score of 26. Flat Rock Middle School, sponsored by Sherry Jarvis, claimed second with a mean score of 24.75. Sponsored by Randal Hylemon, Reynolds Middle School finished third with a mean score of 21.5.

Students who scored in the top 7 percent in the Comprehensive division qualified for the State Mathematics Contest, which will be held Thursday, April 28, at the School of Science and Mathematics in Durham.

The top 10 percent of winners in the Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry divisions advance to the state finals for the western region, scheduled for Thursday, May 5, at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
