WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY STUDENT
AND WESTERN CAROLINIAN RECEIVE AWARDS

CULLOWHEE – The Columbia Scholastic Press Association awarded Michael Davis of Kannapolis and the Western Carolinian newsmagazine two 2003 Gold Circle awards for newspaper layout and design.

Davis, editor of the campus publication, received a national first place Gold Circle award for coverage of the USA Patriot Act, in the “single-subject double-truck presentation” category for college newspapers. He also was awarded a certificate of merit for coverage of the university Writing Center’s collaborative process in the “black & white newspaper tabloid feature page design” category.

The son of Edgar Davis and Jane Miller, Davis is a graduate of Enloe High School. He is a senior at WCU, majoring in communication.

The awards were announced in March at Columbia University in New York.
