WESTERN CAROLINA TO OFFER NEW
MASTER OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM

CULLOWHEE -- Two information sessions will be held for individuals interested in Western Carolina University’s new master’s degree program in entrepreneurship, which begins in the fall.

The first session will be held in the Laurel Forum in Karpen Hall on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Asheville on Thursday, May 22, at 6 p.m. A second session will be held at the Hendersonville Chamber of Commerce, 330 N. King St., on Thursday, May 29, at 6 p.m.

The curriculum is based on practical knowledge with an emphasis on learning in the form of hands-on projects, demonstrations and assignments.

The lead faculty for the program are Jim Carland, WCU professor of entrepreneurship, and JoAnn Carland, WCU professor of entrepreneurship. The Carlands share eight appearances as finalists for the WCU University Scholar Award; Jim won that distinction recently for the 2002-03 academic year and JoAnn won in 1996.

“This program extends Western’s reach into its service area by bringing its expertise to bear on one of the most critical elements of our time -- the creation, nurture and growth of the economic engine of our region,” said Jim Carland.

Jim and JoAnn Carland have earned more than a dozen research awards from various entrepreneurship associations and academies. Among their publications, they have co-authored more than 50 journal articles, five books and 150 scholarly papers, and made more than 100 presentations at entrepreneurship conferences.

“Our program is designed to focus on real-world practical, useful skills, and we strive to help our students become more flexible, creative, open-minded, and more well-rounded in skills and outlook,” said JoAnn Carland.
