WESTERN TO TAKE PART IN
AMERICAN DEMOCRACY PROJECT
CULLOWHEE – Western Carolina University is one of 146 institutions of higher education across the country taking part in the American Democracy Project, an effort designed to increase the number of undergraduate students who participate in meaningful civic actions.
Sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the project addresses the country’s decreasing rate of participation in civic life, including voting, advocacy and other forms of civic engagement.
Project organizers hope to create a national conversation among campuses about the practice of civic engagement; develop institutional commitment through the involvement of senior administrators, faculty, staff and students; focus on civic engagement as a learning experience for undergraduates; and share successful civic engagement models with an audience of higher education institutions and policy makers.
