CULLOWHEE – Kim Elliott has been named director of the Office for Rural Education at Western Carolina University.

Elliott most recently served as the director of curriculum, instruction and staff development for kindergarten through 12th grade for the Alleghany County Board of Education. She holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in school administration from Appalachian State University and is currently writing her doctoral dissertation in educational leadership.

In her new position, Elliott will work on grant writing, teacher recruitment, teacher retention and partnership building for the 49 westernmost North Carolina school systems.  Elliott said her office will partner with other university offices to host Legislators' School for Youth Leadership Development, Teachers of Tomorrow Day, and other events for teachers and students in Western North Carolina.

“Western is fortunate to have hired a person with Kim's skills and experiences to direct our Office for Rural Education,” said Michael Dougherty, dean of the College of Education and Allied Professions.  “She brings a wealth of valuable public school experiences to the job that will allow Western to serve and be engaged with its school partners even more effectively.  Two of her first tasks will be to develop a strategic plan for the Office for Rural Education and to create a plan for marketing its services to the public schools.”

Established in 1985, the Office for Rural Education is designed to increase awareness of strengths and needs of rural schools and communities in North Carolina, develop creative systems to better serve rural youth and their teachers, identify research activities designed to better understand the issues facing rural education in the state, and provide training and program activities to help meet rural school needs.
