CULLOWHEE Riccardo S. McClendon of Charlotte is Western Carolina University's first-ever recipient of a North Carolina Tourism Education Foundation scholarship.

One of six scholarships awarded annually by the NCTEF, the award includes $1,000 and free registration at a North Carolina hospitality or tourism conference of the student's choice. A professional conference, a rare opportunity for any student, is an amazing chance to learn more about the student's given field of choice, said Bonnie Martin, assistant professor of hospitality and tourism.

The other NCTEF scholarships were awarded to students at Appalachian State, East Carolina, and N.C. State universities.

The competitive scholarships are awarded to qualified N.C. students majoring in hospitality and tourism based on merit and academics. A nonprofit corporation, NCTEF was founded in 1992, and has been awarding the scholarships since its inception.  Funding for the scholarships is earned from an annual auction at the N.C. Governor's Conference on Tourism.

McClendon is a junior at Western with a major in hospitality and tourism and a concentration in political science. He is the former president of the student Hospitality and Tourism Association, a club sponsored by Martin.
