CULLOWHEE Jessica Jarrard of Davidson County has been appointed editor-in-chief of the Western Carolinian, the award-winning student newsmagazine at Western Carolina University.

A 2002 graduate of North Davidson High School, Jarrard is a junior at Western majoring in political science and history. She is the daughter of Laura Jarrard of Davidson County.

As editor-in-chief of the Western Carolinian, she oversees a staff of nine writers and editors who produce the biweekly publication. The Columbia Scholastic Press Association awarded the Western Carolinian newsmagazine two 2003 Gold Circle awards for newspaper layout and design.

Jarrard was editor of her high school newspaper and worked as a stringer for The Dispatch newspaper in Lexington.

A member of Western's Honors College, Jarrard also works at a tutor in the university's Writing Center.
