CULLOWHEE – Paul and Cecelia Caldwell of Fletcher recently contributed gifts to establish an endowed scholarship fund of $100,000 at Western Carolina University in honor of Paul's parents, Ed and Nell Caldwell of Asheville.

The Ed and Nell Caldwell Scholarship Fund is designed to provide assistance to enable financially disadvantaged students from Western North Carolina to attend Western. The scholarship will award approximately $4,500 per academic year.

A 1980 graduate of Western, Paul Caldwell is owner of a cabinet-making company. Cecelia Caldwell is a pediatrician who practices in Buncombe County.

The scholarship honors Ed and Nell Caldwell's lifelong work and dedication to education, said Brett Woods, director of annual and special gifts at Western.

“A successful small business owner in Asheville for more than 30 years, Ed Caldwell gave much of his personal time to the improvement of education in Buncombe County, serving two terms on the Buncombe County school board,” Woods said. “Nell Caldwell, a homemaker, raised four children who all went on to higher education at Western. After staying home with her children in their early years, she went back to work to ensure that all her children could attend college.”
