Troy Barksdale
Troy Barksdale, is new director of planning at Western Carolina University.

CULLOWHEE - Troy Barksdale, formerly associate vice president for program assessment for The University of North Carolina Office of the President, is new director of university planning at Western Carolina University.

Barksdale joined the Western staff in mid-November after 10 years as associate vice president in the UNC program assessment office, which functions as the institutional research and planning arm of the UNC system.

In his previous job, Barksdale collected data from the 16 campuses, analyzed the data, and presented the data for use in operations and planning. He was involved in analysis of funding issues and enrollment projections, and he studied student demographics, degrees, majors, courses, degrees awarded, and how to measure student success rates and how to make students more successful.

At Western, Barksdale will work in a similar capacity, only working with greater detail. He will look at retention in various areas-studying ways to improve retention, analyzing a number of geographic factors that might influence students’ decisions to return to Western, and helping the university to define and achieve its goals.

Barksdale began his career in education as an English and speech teacher and as a guidance counselor. He has his doctorate in educational research from Louisiana State University, and earned his master’s degree at LSU and his bachelor’s degree at Louisiana College.

Prior to joining the UNC system in 1993, he worked in the office of budget and planning at LSU and the office of institutional research for the Louisiana State University system.
