THREE CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED                                                                                                            
FOR ATHLETICS DIRECTOR AT WESTERN

CULLOWHEE Three candidates for the position of director of athletics at Western Carolina University will visit the Cullowhee campus during the period Aug. 2-5 for interviews.

Names of the candidates were announced Friday, July 30, by Gibbs Knotts, assistant professor of political science and public affairs at Western and faculty athletics representative, who is serving as chairman of the athletics director search committee.

The eight-member committee, assembled earlier this month, has been conducting a nationwide search for a replacement for C. Jeffery Compher. Director of athletics at Western since March 2000, Compher announced July 12 that he has accepted the position of executive associate director of athletics at the University of Washington.

In addition to meetings with university administrators, athletics department administrative staff, coaches, student-athletes and Catamount Club board members, the candidates will attend receptions open to the campus and surrounding community.

The three candidates, in order of their campus visits:

David J. Horning, senior associate director of athletics at N.C. State University; Monday, Aug. 2, with a reception from 4 until 5 p.m., Hospitality Room of the Ramsey Regional Activity Center.

Christopher J. Massaro, senior associate athletics director at the University of South Carolina; Tuesday, Aug. 3, with a reception from noon until 1 p.m., Hospitality Room of the Ramsey Regional Activity Center.

Charles G. Cobb, associate athletics director for external operations at N.C. State University, Thursday, Aug. 5, with a reception from 3 until 4 p.m., Tom Young Room of Jordan-Phillips Fieldhouse.
