WCU TO HOST FALL LECTURES
Western Carolina University's Phi Beta Delta honor society for international scholars is collaborating with the Asheville World Affairs Council to sponsor two lectures this fall by experts in foreign policy, terrorism and energy security.
The first lecture, “American Faces the World: The ‘Myth' Of Security,” will be held Monday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the recital hall of WCU's Coulter Building. Glenn Palmer, executive director of the Peace Science Society and editor of the quarterly journal Conflict Management and Peace Science, will discuss his new book, “A Theory of Foreign Policy.” Palmer, a political scientist at Pennsylvania State University, has conducted research focusing on international conflict and the relationship between domestic politics and foreign policy.
Global terrorism will be the subject of the second lecture on Monday, Nov. 13. Peter Probst, a former CIA agent who now works with the Institute for the Study of Political Violence, will give an analysis titled “Global Jihad: Challenge and Response.” The presentation also will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Coulter Building recital hall.
Admission to the lectures is $7. Students and Phi Beta Delta members are admitted free of charge.
The Phi Beta Delta Honor Society, in collaboration with the Asheville World Affairs Council, and WCU's Office of International Programs and Services, works to advance international awareness on the WCU campus and broader community and foster Western North Carolina's global ties by encouraging public participation in national policy debates. The activities are co-sponsored by WCU's departments of anthropology and sociology, political science and public affairs, history, and criminal justice.
