WESTERN HOSTS WELL-KNOWN ARTIST Tom Turner, a professional artist who has worked with high-fired porcelain for more than 35 years, will visit Western Carolina University's students as part of the Godfrey Seminar on the Business of Crafts from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24. Turner will talk with students about the operations of a successful pottery business. Turner received his bachelor's degree in art from Illinois State University and his master's degree in fine arts from Clemson University. During his career, Turner has established a ceramic art program for the College of Architecture at Clemson University, taught at leading craft schools such as Penland and Arrowmont, and conducted more than 125 workshops throughout the country. Turner's work has been exhibited in more than 150 invitationals and 50 juried shows. His work also has appeared in Craft Horizons, Ceramics Monthly, Studio Potter, The Washingtonian, House Beautiful, Southern Living, Ceramica of Madrid, Ceramic Review of London and dozens of books. Turner will present two clay demonstrations, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in Room 152 of the Fine and Performing Arts Center. Turner also will give a slide presentation from 5 to 6 p.m. in Room 223. |
