A newly endowed scholarship fund at Western Carolina University established in honor of Robert Holquist, WCU's director of choral activities since 1979, will provide financial assistance to students majoring in music and vocal performance.

Gifts from individual contributors have pushed the Robert A. Holquist Scholarship Fund past the $10,000 level, making it possible for WCU to award the first scholarship for the 2006 fall semester. The fund was established in 2000 by members of the Western Carolina Concert Choir and the Early Music Ensemble in honor of their director.

The scholarship is designed to provide support for a deserving incoming or returning student, and will be awarded on the basis of musical and vocal ability, membership in the Concert Choir, participation in music department events, and academic standing.

Holquist, a professor of music at WCU, teaches applied voice, choral methods and conducting. During his 27-year tenure at Western, he has maintained an active schedule as a conductor, bass-baritone soloist and educator. He regularly appears on the faculty recital series and as a soloist in regional performances. Holquist directs regional choral clinics in North and South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.

For information on applying for the Robert A. Holquist Scholarship, contact the WCU department of music at (828) 227-7242.
