The purpose of the Office for Provost is to provide varied and well-rounded educational programs at the bachelor's, master's, educational specialist, and doctoral levels that serve the needs of the people of the state and the region, and that foster the development, preservation, dissemination and utilization of knowledge through effective teaching, learning, research, creativity, and service.
To accomplish its purpose, the academic area of the university is administratively organized into colleges of Applied Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business, and Education and Allied Professions. An Honors College and the Graduate School are additional units of the Office of the Provost.
Other units of the university which are administratively responsible to the Office of the Provost are the Center for Regional Development, Western Programs in Asheville, International Programs and Services, Continuing Education and Summer School, Enrollment Management, and the Hunter Library. The Office of the Provost has general responsibility for research administration (administratively located within the Graduate School) which is responsible for providing information and services concerned with funded research, sponsored programs, and other grant/contract activities. Through the Speech and Hearing Center and the Developmental Evaluation Center (administratively located in the College of Education and Allied Professions, the University provides an administrative structure whereby clinical services are provided to the residents of the southwestern area of the state in cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Human Resources. The Mountain Aquaculture Research Center (administratively located within the College of Arts and Sciences) conducts biotechnologically based research to support the economic sustainability of the aquaculture industry in Western North Carolina.
The Office of the Provost also provides oversight for special units such as the Office for Rural Education, the Center for Math and Science Education (both administratively located in the College of Education and Allied Professions), and for the Highlands Biological Station.
The Office of the Provost cooperates with regional and state agencies, including area health organizations, community colleges and technical institutes, the State Department of Public Instruction, Appalachian Consortium, and others to meet educational needs of the region. It works with federal agencies in a variety of ways including the National Park Service and others from which substantial grants have been received.
