The Center's outreach programs provide students, teachers, and groups with an exciting way to extend classroom learning and enrich adult programming. Programs are offered free of charge.
*Programs range from 1 to 2 hours
*1 adult chaperone is required for every 15 students
*Help us provide a great program by telling us what your class is studying, any special needs your group has, ans what you would like emphasized
*Programs are developed in accordance with the NC Standard Course of Study guidelines. These include Arts Education, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. A complete list is available for each program according to your class's level.

Description: Introduces students to pioneer life in southern Appalachia. It includes books, touchable artifacts, and curriculum-based materials.

Description: Introduces the diversity and history of quilts. Includes a quilt with historic designs; quilt-related books; touchable samples; 4-th grade curriculum-based activities for math, English, and oral history; a computer software program; and lots of supporting materials for teachers.

Description: How our ancestors passed the time on the back porch or out in the yard. What stories did they tell, what games did they play, and what toys did they make? Try making some toys and playing with others.

Description: An introduction to the rich textile history of the southern Appalachian region. A hands-on experience engaging many senses.

Description: An exploration of candles, lamps, and lanterns. Experience tallow, beeswax, oil, and electric forms of lighting.
For: Senior groups, nursing facilities
Length: 30 minutes - 1 hour
Description: Historical photographs and artifacts from the collection are selected to stimulate a discussion of folk traditions, tools, and lifestyles.
