Summer Camps for Kids

 
The Mountain Heritage Center hosts summer camps sponsored in part by the Jackson County Arts Council with the assistance of WCU's Division of Distance and Continuing Education.

All camps take place at the Mountain Heritage Center on the WCU campus. Registration is limited to the first 12 paid participants for each camp. Camp starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at noon each day.

Mountain Mysteries
June 18 - 22, 2007
A cultural history camp for children who have just completed the 3rd or 4th grade. The program explores the heritage of southern Appalachia beginning with the Native Americans and continuing through the pioneer experience. The children work on historic crafts, listen to a traditional musician, take a field trip to see local sites of interest, investigate artifacts, and generally have a lot of fun learning about the people who lived in this area 100 to 1000 years ago.

Western Carolina University - Youth Camps & Courses

Mini-Camp for Middle Schoolers
June 26 - 28, 2007
A cultural camp for middle school youth who have just completed 5th and 6th grades. The camp has a Cherokee Heritage theme and will explore the history of the Cherokee and the contributions of the Cherokee past and present to the area. Participants will spend time with a local craftsperson, a storyteller, and will take a field trip to a local historic site.

Eco-Adventures Summer Camp
July 9 - 13, 2007
A natural history camp for children who have just completed the 1st or 2nd grade. The program will allow the children to explore insects, flowers, trees, and other aspects of our mountain environment. Each exploration culminates in art-based activities and the week includes a field trip to a wild area within Jackson County.
