Meet our staff

 
Kathleen Collins is the program assistant. She orients visitors to the Center and oversees budgetary processes and office records. She attended Western Carolina University and Southwestern Community College. A native of the region, she is a fifth-generation member of a chair-making craft family.

Leslie Costa is historic interpreter. She holds an M.S. in entomology and an M.L.A. (Landscape Architecture) from the University of Georgia. She assists in artifact curation, exhibit development, and outreach educational programs at the Center.

Michele Glover is Mountain Heritage Day Coordinator. She holds a M.A.
in American History from Western Carolina University. Michele teaches
history at Southwestern Community College.

Peter Koch is education associate. He holds an M.A. in public history from North Carolina State University. Please contact him if you have comments or would like more information on the calendar of events, educational programs, or volunteer opportunities.

Suzanne Hill McDowell is curator. A native of the region, she holds an M.A. in American history from Western Carolina University. With ten years of experience in museum work, collection management, and folklife programming she also is an experienced handweaver and co-created the NEA-funded "Coverlets" exhibit.

Scott Philyaw is director.  He received his M.A. from the College of William and Mary and his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. He is a specialist in the colonial and revolutionary periods and also has strong interests in the American West and public history.
