Cherokee Baskets

The Mountain Heritage Center announces the opening of a new exhibit. Organized by guest curator Steve Lott, the exhibition features well over 100 baskets on loan from regional collectors in the four major Cherokee basketry traditions of rivercane, white oak, honeysuckle, and maple.

Baskets have been part of Cherokee life and legend for centuries. The current exhibition features baskets made from the 19th century to the late 1990s, and includes work by Ramona Baith, Ollie Bigwitch, Nancy Bradley, Rowena Bradley, Nancy Conseen, Ollie Hornbuckle, Lucille Lossiah, Mary Jane Lossiah, Mollie Lossiah, Ramona Lossiah, Emily Smith, Mary Tramper, Agnes Welch, Maidena Wildcatt, Eva Wolfe.

Special programming events planned in conjunction with this exhibit included basket making demonstrations and the connoisseurship of collecting.
