 Historical Note

The Jackson County, North Carolina, Superintendents of Education for the period covered by the ledger were Joseph Keener (1853 to 1858) and James W. Terrell (spring 1858 to 1869). In a report dated October 6, 1858, to the Rev. C. H. Wiley, Superintendent of Common Schools for the State of North Carolina, Terrell noted that "in March 1853 the County Court appointed a Board of Superintendents of Common Schools" and that in 1858 "we redistricted the county, making in it forty-six districts..." At the time of Terrell's report, thirty-four of the districts had submitted reports and indicated 1,456 children in those districts (quote and source: Historical Committee, Jackson County Unit, North Carolina Education Association, Jackson County Public Schools, 1853-1954, [s.l.: s.n.], 1954, page 5). The number of committee men recorded in the ledger in 1861 corresponds to the number of districts mentioned in Terrell's report.

Content and Scope

Ledger with a title page heading "Common School Record of the Proceedings of the Board Superintendents of Jackson County." The ledger consists thirty-two (32) pages and has entries dated between 1853 and 1861 for Jackson County, North Carolina. It includes an April 1861 entry with a list of "committeemen" that has forty-six numbered names. There is also a final, unrelated entry dated March 16, 1891, Cashiers, N.C., concerning a legal notice.
