Biographical Note

The 1910 federal census lists a "Lewis A. Hampton," age 46, in the Forney's Creek district of Swain County, North Carolina. Also in the household is a son, Golman J. Hampton, age 12. The Heritage of Swain County, North Carolina, 1988 (Bryson City, N.C.: Swain County Genealogical and Historical Society in cooperation with the History Division of Hunter Publishing Company, Winston-Salem, N.C., 1988) also lists, on page 180, Lewis A. Hampton, born December 20, 1863, and with a son, Golman Jackson Hampton, from a previous marriage, born July 8, 1897. According to addresses on the postal cards in the collection, Hampton was living in Anderson County, Tennessee, in the 1940s.

Content and Scope

The collection contains a variety of items relating to Louis Hampton of North Carolina (later of Tennessee). There is one piece of correspondence, a letter written by Horace Kephart (1862-1931) to Louis Hampton, addressed from Lindale, Georgia, and dated October 5, 1909. In the letter, Kephart details his travels over the past year, his current living arrangements with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Barnett, future plans, and requests for news from Hampton about recent events in Swain County, North Carolina. At this time Kephart was beginning to establish himself as a writer and an authority on outdoor life and Southern Appalachia. He had lived in Swain County from 1904 to 1907, and would return in 1910. A picture of Hampton appeared in Kephart's photograph album, and is available for viewing at Hunter Library's "Horace Kephart: Revealing an Enigma" website. In addition to these items, the collection also contains a personal ledger of Louis Hampton with dates from 1903 to 1949, detailing sources of income and expenditures as well as receipts for purchases made by Hampton, made primarily between 1948 and 1949.
