Historical Note
The Sylva Paperboard Company, later known as the Mead Corporation, began operations in Sylva, North Carolina, in 1928 and produced paper board. It was a major employer in Jackson County, North Carolina, in the 1940s. Sylva was incorporated in 1889. In 1913 Jackson County voters approved a measure to move the county seat from the nearby town of Webster to Sylva. By 1950 the town of Sylva had a population of about 1400, and would grow to over 2400 by the 2000 federal census.
Content and Scope
Ten (10) color photographic slides taken by Lewis Ellsworth, featuring the vicinity of Sylva, in Jackson County, North Carolina. Six slides date from circa 1949, one from circa 1969, and three from 2003. Scenes include Sylva's Main Street, views of Sylva from a distance, and the town's former Mead Corporation paper manufacturing plant (later the Jackson Paper Manufacturing Company).
