<head>Biographical and Historical Note</head>
<p><persname>George Job Huntley</persname> was born in <geogname>Rutherford County, North Carolina</geogname>, on April 17, 1841. He was the oldest of the nine children of <persname>William Lawrence Huntley</persname> and <persname>Sara Jane Collins</persname>. He was a farmer and a teacher before the <subject>Civil War</subject> began. He was never married. Huntley enlisted in <corpname>Company I of the 34th Regiment North Carolina Troops</corpname> on November 10, 1861. He was wounded at <geogname>Gaines Mills</geogname> during the <subject>Seven Days Battles in Virginia</subject> in late June 1862 and also may have been wounded during the battle of <subject>Second Manassas</subject> in August or September 1862. On the first day of the battle at <geogname>Gettysburg, Pennsylvania</geogname> (July 1, 1863), Huntley received a mortal wound. He died the next day (July 2, 1863) at age 22 after twenty months service in the Confederate army.<lb/><lb/>

The letters of George Job Huntley have been published in the book, The Cry is War, War, War, edited and annotated by Michael W. Taylor (Dayton, Ohio: Morningside, 1994). Huntley's letters comprise the first half of the book, with the second half consisting of the correspondence of a fellow soldier in the same regiment, <persname>Burwell Thomas Cotton</persname>.</p>

<head>Content and Scope</head>
<p>George Job Huntley corresponded often with friends and family during the war. He frequently wrote to his sister, <persname>Tincy Elizabeth Huntley</persname>, who was only three years younger (she was born May 16, 1844). Huntley's first letter is dated November 22, 1861 and the final letter June 29, 1863. However, there are no letters for the period between August 15, 1862, and March 18, 1863.
