<persname>George Washington Carver (1864-1943)</persname> was a noted African-American <subject>educator</subject> and <subject>agricultural scientist</subject> who was associated with <corpname>Tuskegee Institute</corpname> (now <corpname>Tuskegee University</corpname>) in <geogname>Macon County, Alabama</geogname> for most of his career.  The <famname>Slagle family</famname> resided in <geogname>Jackson County, North Carolina</geogname> at the time of their correspondence with Carver.
