<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>
Dr. John R. Brinkley, a maverick doctor and broadcaster, was born near Sylva, North Carolina in <date normal="1885">1885</date>.  Generally regarded as a quack, Brinkley first practiced <subject>medicine</subject> in Kansas.  He prescribed treatments over the air to <subject>radio</subject> listeners who mailed in their symptoms.  Brinkley was also famous for his "goat gland" operation that purported to restore male sexual potency by implanting goat gonads in patients.  
</p>
<p>
In 1930, Brinkley lost his medical and broadcasting licenses in Kansas, and he lost bids for the Kansas governorship in 1930 and 1932.  In 1931, he moved his broadcasting operations to Mexico, across the border from Del Rio, Texas.  Eventually he moved to Del Rio to carry on his medical practices and broadcast activities.  He died in San Antonio, Texas in <date normal="1942">1942</date>.
